THE LAST UNBEATEN EGG | Short Story
SOMETIMES THE HARDEST THING TO BREAK ISN’T THE EGG.
Every morning at exactly eight-fourteen, Arthur tries to stop the clock.
To the quiet village of Great Eyrenbury, Arthur is the “Sultan of Soft-Boil”, a twelve-time culinary champion who has turned the simple act of boiling an egg into a flawless science. To himself, he is a man trapped inside a museum of his own making.
Arthur’s kitchen runs on precision. The timer is perfectly calibrated. The mahogany table is polished to a mirror shine. And at the centre sits a single, uncracked egg.
For twelve years, Arthur has refused to breach the shell, holding tightly to the rituals that keep his carefully ordered world exactly as it is.
But a clockmaker’s precision is no match for the chaos of the living.
When a young girl named Daisy breaks his solitude at exactly eight-fourteen, armed with a neon-pink raincoat, a bucket of snails and a barrage of unwelcome questions, Arthur’s meticulously frozen universe begins to slip out of alignment.
The Last Unbeaten Egg is a moving, bittersweet and quietly funny short story about grief, ritual, unexpected friendship and the shells we build around ourselves when moving forward feels impossible.
